I’m irked. More than irked. I think it’s downright evil.
I’m talking about security products that aren’t real security products. They serve no real purpose but to defraud people from hard-earned money. You may have heard about spyware, you may even have heard about malware, but chances are, you haven’t heard much about scareware.
Scareware is the newest internet scam. It comes in a variety of flavours, but they all serve the same purpose. A popup appears on your screen, either claiming to have detected a virus or security breach, and recommending to download a program to run a free virus scan. However, when you go to download the program, it mentions that your license has expired and that you need to pay for a renewal to continue the cleaning process.
Looks legitimate, right? It’s all fake. None of these viruses are on the system.
The problem is, these so-called “viruses” don’t actually exist on your system. You just paid for a useless subscription to a program that may or may not have legitimate value. However, whether the program actually accomplishes anything productive or not is irrelevant. It is utterly immoral to trick people into purchasing your product, legitimate or not. I’m glad they’re trying to make this illegal.
As far as I’m concerned, they should be charged to the fullest extent of the law. These types of marketing are a disgrace to the legitimate security community.
