Designing Something? Turn off your Monitor

Posted by Greg Hluska in Unclassified

I think that I have the greatest job in the world. Basically, I get to spend all day working on the bleeding edge of internet security. Netsecure is a great company to work for and I'm surrounded by some of the funnest people I know every time I go in to work. And, in my customer support role, I get to meet and make friends with SmartSwipers from around the world.

Certain SmartSwipers stand out to me. One particular gentleman really opened my eyes towards the world of accessibility.

True eureka moments seem to come at the most unexpected times. In my case, it came while I was trying to help a blind gentleman use SmartSwipe. He suggested that I turn off my monitor and try to use a screen reader that he recommended. So, I did. Results were absolutely shocking - I could not surf the web or even check my email.

I would blame the software, but I don't think that would be fair. The particular screen reader is very powerful and vastly configurable.

I have had that screen reader installed on two computers ever since that moment. Now, when I work on things, I turn on a screen reader and turn off my monitor so that I can see the page blind. And I think that you should as well.
