Seems like Symantec themselves are saying that anti-virus software isn’t enough to protect against modern threats…

Here is a direct quote from the article's summary:
“Antivirus and antispyware software, primarily reactive in nature, may have been sufficient to protect vital resources a few years ago, but not today. Proactive endpoint security measures that protect against zero-day attacks as well as unknown threats are now vital to any organization.”
…and this was two years ago.
