It is one of the most common questions we hear - "I swiped my card and these locks appeared in the boxes on the web page.  What is going on?"

Those 'locks' are what we call 'protected icons'.  When you swipe your card, the SmartSwipe device takes chunks of information off of the card, protects those chunks and then automatically places the information into the appropriate boxes on the payment page. (Please note - this is a rather severe oversimplication, the whole process is much more complex than that)

To review, the following types of information should always be protected (if they appear on the payment page):

  1. Credit Card Number
  2. Cardholder's Name
  3. Credit Card Expiry Information
  4. CVV/CVC/Credit Card Identification Number (in figure 1, the website uses 'Card Security Number')
  5. Credit Card Type

Credit Card Type does not necessarily have to be protected as a criminal cannot do much with the knowledge that you have a Visa card.
